Open letter on the protection of the Amazon
In May 2020, 41 international businesses representatives in the fields of livestock and feed production, retail, finance and standards bodies, including the ProTerra Foundation, signed a letter addressed to Deputies and Senators of the National Congress of Brazil, calling on the withdrawal of the proposed 2633/2020 land reform bill aimed to provide amnesty to those engaged in illegal land grabs and deforestation in the Amazon.[1]
A year later, the subject was brought back to the table with the approval of the Deputies, without public debate. The new legislative proposal, called PL 510/21, eases rules for environmental licensing in Brazil, possibly creating an even greater threat to the Amazon than before.
In response, on May 5, 2021, 36 organisations sent an open letter on the protection of the Amazon to the Deputies and Senators of the National Congress of Brazil, reaffirming the Amazon as an important part of the Earth system, essential to our planet and a vital part of a prosperous future for both Brazilians and society as a whole, urging the Brazilian government to reconsider its proposal.
